Cincinnati (German speaking ‘Zinzinnati’) in the U.S. state of Ohio is one of the most important commercial and manufacturing towns of America and is known as the "Queen of the West". The city was founded in 1788 and from 1850 onwards many immigrants moved to Cincinnati from northwestern Germany - evidenced today by the many German family names.
The Cincinnati German beer festival begins every year on the same day as the original Munich Oktoberfest. This Oktoberfest beer festival lasts for 3 days and just as in Bavaria it includes a beer barrel race and many of the traditional Bavarian entertainments.
Traditionally costumed characters like Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Homer Simpson, Mr. Reds (mascot of the local baseball team) and the Frisch's ‘Big Boy’ roll beer barrels through the city streets; local celebrities carry massive beer jugs through an obstacle course and you’ll also find the traditional Dirndl dresses, lederhosen, alpenhorns and Bavarian food with delicacies like schnitzel and sauerkraut balls.
Other festival entertainments include the Bavarian dancing - the not to be missed ‘Chicken Dance’ for which city streets are cordoned off - and the dog race where all participating dogs are dressed in a hot dog costume.
