History of traditional costumes - The creation of leather Trousers

Geschichte der Trachten

The classic men's trouser of the past was the so-called culotte, tight-fitting knee breeches. It was made of different materials from linen and wool to velvet and silk and was worn all over the population.

In the Alpine region, the pattern of the culotte was transformed into the know well known Lederhosen. The Trachten Lederhosen were simple, robust and hard-wearing. When working in the fields and on the mountain pastures, they offered their wearers protection from cold, heat and rain.

The traditional costumes Lederhosen for men, as we know them today, are a product of the South German aristocracy. The Wittelsbacher dynasty wanted to give their Kingdom of Bavaria, newly created in the 19th century, an unmistakable touch through clothing. Thus the traditional Lederhosen were created together with the traditional costume vest and a hat around 1850 as an outfit for hunting.

The traditional costume Lederhosen was a status symbol at that time. Once the fashion had been created, traditional costumes became a cultural asset. Already in 1859 the first traditional costume association was founded. Even today, many people in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland are active in traditional costume associations and cultivate their local customs. Traditional costume fashion experienced a real boom in the 1950s and 1960s.

The short traditional Lederhosen or the longer traditional leather trousers were always present in everyday life, but also on festive occasions. The popularity of traditional Lederhosen has meanwhile spread not only to the whole of Germany but also to the rest of the world. Visitors from Argentina to Zimbabwe wear Bavarian Lederhosen when they visit the Oktoberfest. Many people also buy Lederhosen today in order to document a sense of tradition and style at festive, but also traditional occasions.

Which leather for Lederhosen?

Welches Leder

The Trachten Lederhosen is the core of an authentic wardrobe and represents a purchase for life. Traditionally, the man's wardrobe contains leather trousers for festive occasions and one for everyday life.

These are knee-length leather trousers. But also the short traditional costumes leather trousers are often worn. Suede leather is the preferred material, but some decide to buy leather trousers also for a more festive version made of smooth leather.

In terms of colour, the Trachten Lederhosen cover the spectrum between light brown and dark natural leather. If you like, you can also buy coloured Lederhosen nowadays.

What makes the traditional costumes leather trousers valuable is the rustik look created by wearing them for a long time. The patina on split leather leather trousers is particularly beautiful. The Trachten Lederhosen are delivered unembroidered or with applications. Ultimately it is the personal taste that decides. A high-quality traditional costume leather trousers for men has its price. Handmade models can be very pricey and there is almost no limit.

This is the case, for example, with deerskin. But meanwhile there are cheaper variants of other types of leather from well-known manufacturers. It is important to know that traditional trousers are chamois tanned. With this tanning process, fish oil causes the animal skin to oxidize. The leather tanning process takes six to nine months.

A traditional Bavarian Lederhosen is made out of one of the following materials:

Hirschleder

Deerskin

Deerskin is velvety soft and yet hard-wearing. This ensures a warm feel and a pleasant surface structure. Original Bavarian Lederhosen made of buckskin is, so to speak, the royalty in the field of traditional costume leather trousers.

Ziegenleder

Goat skin

Goatskin is the third most frequently produced type of leather in the world. There are no fat deposits in goatskin, which makes the material light and fine, but still resistant. Due to combination tanning, goatskin is quite inexpensive, which is why traditional leather trousers made of this material are affordable but still stylish. Goatskin is mostly used as suede leather for the traditional costume assortment.

Lammleder

Lamb leather

Lamb leather is often processed as smooth leather, which eliminates the rough surface structure typical of Bavarian Lederhosen. For finer occasions, however, lamb leather is ideal because it is soft, light and very noble.

Rindsleder

Cow leather

This type of leather is stable and variable in use. Due to the worldwide high consumption of beef this material is very affordable.

Kalbsleder

Calf Leather

This is the leather of the young cow. Calf leather has a particularly even and firm structure and is finer and more expensive than cow leather.

Schweinsleder

Pig Leather

Pigskin is rich in fat and has characteristic small holes in its surface. Especially in the favourable assortment of traditional costumes there is a lot of pigskin. This leather is not too warm and light, but can leave a slightly sticky feeling on the skin.

Types of Lederhosen

Arten von Lederhosen

Two forms are typical for the traditional costumes Lederhosen in the Alps. On the one hand there are the knee-length leather trousers and on the other hand the short traditional costumes leather trousers.

Long trouser legs were in use at festive occasions, short models were preferred for hunting. A genuine Bavarian Lederhosen has an embroidery and the trouser pocket, which is also called the trouser door.

A traditional leather trousers for men also has a knife pocket on the right side. This is for the Feitel called hunting knife.

The Trends 2022 traditional costume lederhosen show that the use of suspenders is becoming more and more common and that instead an opulent traditional costume belt is being used deep down on the hips. Darkened colour variations, but also light grey tones are the trend in 2022.
